Through a generous grant provided by the Weyerhaeuser Family Foundation, Asia Initiatives and our partner, Parmarth Samaj Sevi Sansthan have created a program to encourage alternate sources of income for people in areas of Uttar Pradesh, India. Seasonal laborers or farm workers often suffer an extreme loss of income in non-arable months. To offset this effect and to make livelihoods more secure, we have launched a project providing loans to villagers to purchase goats. In addition to m
eat, goats serve valuable nutritional purpose via milk and other dairy products and can also be entered in a breeding program to be sold at a later date. In addition to goats, participants have access to veterinary care, information sessions on goat rearing and constant access to support and help throughout the process. This project is an important step in the right direction to create stable jobs and incomes for people, to make them in charge of their own futures, not on unnecessary aid handouts.
(Updated in June 2019) Under the current project 70 such women for goat support have been identified who are members of community based organization like Pani Panchayat Self Help Groups and also did regular efforts towards village developments. The program has organized a total of 8 reproductive health sessions with self help groups, as well as technical training sessions on goat rearing in which 70 women participated. In accordance to potential success of project, Parmarth is willing to spread out this programme in 5 more villages with 10 women beneficiaries from each village i.e. total 50 villages with especial focus on ST/SC and financial weaker section of society.
