SoCCs to Crowdsource Governance!
Asia Initiatives participated in the Competition for ‘City-preneurs’ to pitch innovations that can help 21st Century cities become liveable and happier. Based on a rigorous evaluation of applications, we were selected among the 12 finalists to pitch our innovations to an eminent jury comprising funders, city leaders, and experts at the summit which was held at Vijaywada, Andhra Pradesh, India from 10th to 12th April. We pitched our innovative concept of Social Capital Credits (SoCCs) to facilitate citizen engagement and make them partners in governance in Amaravati.
We were adjudged among the top 6 winners and were felicitated by the Honorable Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh, Mr. N. Chandrababu Naidu. We have also signed MoU with the government to set up a SoCCs project for Amaravati. Watch this space for more updates.
Social Capital Credits (SoCCs) is an innovative method to crowdsource and transform how cities are designed and managed. It is a “community currency for social good,” which transforms how communities work internally and in partnership with government to improve their neighborhoods and cities. As a proven and powerful tool for engagement and incentivisation, SoCCs enable truly crowdsourced urban design and management. This includes better public spaces, safer streets, better waste management, better education, better health and more green spaces. People have an inherent need to belong, share a common cause and SoCCs give them a chance to come together and effect change. It enables them to drive urban planning strategy, be a participant in creating and maintaining civic services and make government more accountable.
