Domus Kids: Working with Children in Connecticut

Asia Initiatives has partnered with Domus Kids, a local non-profit based in Stamford, Connecticut that lends support to disadvantaged youth in Connecticut. The Asia Initiatives-Domus YEP! (Youth Empowerment Program) initiative uses SOCCs (Social Capital Credits) to incentivize participants to develop professional and life skills that will help them in their future endeavors.

YEP! is designed to support teenagers in high school who come from diverse backgrounds that include circumstances such as the incarceration of a parent, gang violence, abuse, poverty, domestic violence, housing instability and more. The children at Domus are bright individuals who need to be motived to work hard and become successful in school and life.  Asia Initiatives provided the guidance and counselling to motivate these children to succeed. The participants with the Asia Initiatives program were a special group of Counselors in Training (CIT’s) at a summer camp for children in grades K-6th.

The aim of this project is to help these children recognize their potential and set long term goals. The Asia Initiatives team familiarized them with important subjects like Goal Setting, Time Management, Financial Literacy, Resume and Job Interview Tips, Health and Wellness and Using Social Media efficiently. The AI team have weekly meetings where we discuss a topic and then participants are asked to complete activities related to the topic to earn SoCC points. Some activities included are creating a personal schedule, creating a budget, writing a letter to your future self, creating a resume and setting goals (short, intermediate, long term).

The SoCC redeeming menu included group outings, office visits, or a sports day. We visited Stamford hospital to show the participants different jobs in the healthcare field. Our participants also redeemed their SoCC points and earned a fun visit to the Escape Room.

Through this program, we are hoping to enrich the lives of these children and to motivate them to dream bigger. Asia Initiatives and Domus Kids, Inc will continue working on this project.
