Supporting Literacy and Women's Employability
In April 2016, WomenStrong International and Bread for the City, in partnership with Asia Initiatives, has launched a SoCCs project in Anacostia, Washington D.C., to help women improve their lives and their communities. Bread for the City is a Washington D.C. based organization that helps the city's most vulnerable women by providing them with resources and supplies needed to increase their standards of living.
Participants of the projects are all unemployed women with low literacy. Most of them have a history of drug abuse or incarceration in the family. This project aims to help these women to improve their employability and their literacy skills, to give them the confidence to look beyond their current situation and towards a better future. The SoCCs menus were specially designed to respond to their needs and to build their positive spirit. for special items from the SoCCs spending menu such as gym memberships, job interviewing skills workshop, and bus tickets. In order to get SoCCs, the women must complete certain tasks, like assisting with a community kitchen garden, cleaning up part of a neighborhood or joining a book club.
